Who we are

Mary Revelas

Dr Mary, began with a background in microbiology and genetics. Growing up in South Africa, she developed a passion for research while studying antibiotic resistance, particularly in Tuberculosis which was ravaging her country. Her work on mutations in the rpoB gene and the arr gene had helped explain varying resistance levels. After emigrating to Australia and having children, she began researching the biological mechanisms of ageing for better public health outcomes.

Dr Mary began as a researcher at the Centre for Healthy Brain Ageing (CHeBA) Genetics & Epigenomics Group, specialising in the genetics of exceptional longevity and successful ageing. Her research focused on identifying genes strongly associated with longevity, aiming to provide deeper insights into the genetic and lifestyle factors that contribute to long, healthy lives.

Upon the completion of her PhD, Dr Mary received the prestigious Deans Award for Outstanding Contribution with her dissertation titled, “The Genetics of Exceptional Longevity and Successful Ageing”. Her work involved a meta-analysis that identified longevity genes. These longevity genes were further investigated via genetic scores with their relationship to both cardiovascular and metabolic health. Her work has been peer reviewed and published in high impact scientific journals. By better understanding how genetic factors influence the ageing process, Dr Mary hoped to contribute to the development of strategies that promote healthy ageing.

Dr. Mary has been dedicated to advancing scientific understanding in the field of longevity and ageing and her work at CHeBA provided her with the opportunity to collaborate with a diverse group of talented researchers. Through her research, she aims to empower individuals with the knowledge needed to manage their personal health risks and ultimately promote healthier, longer lives.
